From Rick Cloran
Greetings all. At the December
meeting I had suggested that CamNats undertake a new audio
visual showcase program to celebrate our upcoming 50th
anniversary in 2009. This time around I suggested that
we produce it as a digital program, using ProShow Gold or
something similar. In this way we would be able to
distribute the show as a CD or DVD for presentation with out
the need to ship or move the equipment used on our Nature In
Focus Show. It would also allow us to distribute the
show nationally, expanding the audiences that we can reach.
The concept met with the approval of all attending the
meeting. Dan Charbonnet, Shiv Verma, and Henry Weisenberger have agreed to assist with producing the show.
For your convenience a list of members and their images that
were used in Nature in Focus is available by
clicking here.
At this point I would like to invite
all current members (e.g., dues up to date), to submit up
to 40 of your favorite nature or natural history images that
were not previously used in Nature In Focus. We are
interested in a show that covers a broad spectrum of nature
and natural history, so please try to give us a good variety
including work depicting species from other countries,
landscapes, close-ups, and any specialties that you may
have. We also need you to provide a brief statement of
what you have sent to give us positive identification on the
subject, the location, whether the image depicts wildlife or
controlled conditions, etc. If you have medal winners,
we would love to have them, but the images do not need to
have been exhibited or published to be submitted. If
your files are extensive, please include a brief summary of
additional coverage that you have available so that we can
come back to you as we try to fill in any holes we may have.
For those having moved over to
digital capture or who have the capability of scanning your
own slides, please submit the images as you would like them
displayed sized as 1400 maximum horizontal and 1050 maximum
vertical dimensions (1400 x 1050) and 300 ppi.
Since there is a reasonable likelihood that we may need to
tweak cropping or adjust files sizes when we are compiling
the show, all Files should be saved as either TIFF or PSD
format. The actual images in the show will be resized
to lower res jpegs, but we would hate to pass over an
otherwise excellent image because we didn't have the ability
to make a crop or adjustment and maintain a quality result.
We are also using the larger file size to take into account
the newer projection equipment that is starting to come to
market. We are currently planning on making several
versions of the show, including one at the current 1024 x
768 standard, so that we can send the optimal version to the
requesting person or group. File naming should be as follows LastName_FirstName_subject . Filetype
You can send digital files on a CD
or DVD to me (Rick Cloran 820 Humphrey Street, Swampscott,
MA 01907). For those who don't have the ability to do
high quality scans of their slides or negatives, send the
slides or negatives to me at the above address and we will
scan them and return them to you within 60 days of getting
them. We do need you to take the slides out of glass
mounts in order to make the best possible scans and need you
to do that. Gepe makes glassless plastic mounts that
work very well and do not require you to slide your film
chip between the plastic halves as the Pakon mounts do. If
you cannot take an image out of a mount for fear of damaging
it and feel it is unique enough to be considered, you may
send it in mounted (and very well packaged against damage).
Please be aware that mounted slides, particularly in anti-newton glass,
do not always yield a scan of sufficient quality to be
usable. We will not take any mounted slides out of the
mounts. Please be sure to put tracking on any packages sent
in and, please send me an e-mail to tell me that they are
coming.
Once we have received the initial
submissions and processed them we will issue a call for
additional work in areas where we have gaps or would like to
expand the coverage that we have. This won't happen
until the second half of 2008 though, but keep this project
in mind if you will be traveling in the meantime.
Please join with your fellow CamNats
to compile a stunning showcase that will show not only our
shared love of nature, but the quality of the work done by
the CamNats.
RECAP for digital submissions:
- Sized 1400 maximum width on
horizontals or 1050 maximum height on verticals with a
resolution of 300 ppi
- Saved in TIFF or PSD format
- Naming as LastName_FirstName_subject.Filetype
